ഒരു ചെമ്പനീര്‍ പൂവിറുത്തു ഞാനോമലേ...

One beautiful song... Awesome lyrics... Brilliant Rendition by Unni Menon.
For those who love this song,
For those who have heard this song long back but had forgotten,
For those who are listening to this for the first time...

Ode to Her

When you love someone, you don't care for anything else in the world. She's my first and only true love - Music. As I say goodbye to one phase of music in my life, thought I should write something to express how much she means to me.

I've never been a believer in love at first sight. This wasn't one either. I remember the first songs I heard were on our car stereo. The good old fiat had a sound system not worthy of much praise, but music is not about huge speakers. Whatever we hear is through the same ear. beauty is in the eye of the beholder, music is in the ears of the listener. I can't say for certain what changed me into a music fanatic, but my first recognition as a singer in 3rd standard sure helped. I thank my parents forcing me to sing at our school youth festival.. the first of many opportunities I had to entertain the audience. My first English song: Michael Jackson - Heal the World.

Fast forwarding a few years, I was lucky enough to make a niche for myself as someone who can sing western songs pretty well. Groups song at ICSE youth festivals are still some of the wackiest moments of my life. Imagine singing 'In the End' at an inter-school youth festival, with a guitarist who doesn't know to play a string, but still has the passion to play it in front of an overawed audience. LaFest is another occasion not to forget. Surennan and me singing 'Pineapple penne' which still has a cult following. Through these years the most significant fact was that I got to hear more songs - better or worse - I heard all kinds of songs I could get my hand on.

Entering college, I never dreamed there would be any future for expressing my love for music. Getting second in Genesis was a beginning, but the real opportunity came at our Sophomore's day - Miraglo. Don't know what inspired me to form a band, but everything fell together and I'd my first performance as part of a band. The attempt was much appreciated, I guess. That lead to performances for Illuminati, Dhwani, Ragam, College Day etc. I loved each and everyone of the moments I spent on stage. Looking back I'm really proud of the list of songs we performed:

In order of performance,
Greenday - Boulevard of broken dreams
Bryan Adams - Summer of 69
The Rasmus - In the shadows
Thousand Foot Krutch - Rawkfist (backup vocals)
Eagles - Hotel California
S C Chapman - Dive
Deep Purple - Smoke on the water (backup vocals)
Deep Purple - Highway Star
Metallica - Unforgiven II (backup vocals)
Aerosmith - Dream On
Nirvana - Breed (backup vocals)

The ones given in bold are my favorites. I'm listening to Change by Tracy Chapman now. Beautiful tune and lyrics. Thank you God for giving humans the power to enjoy music. Let her soothe us all in sadness, inspire us to be better, entertain us in good times and lead us through... change.

The King!

"Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935–August 16, 1977), was an American singer, musician and actor. He is a cultural icon, often known as "The King of Rock 'n' Roll", or simply "The King".
Presley began his career as one of the first performers of rockabilly, an uptempo fusion of country and rhythm and blues with a strong back beat. His novel versions of existing songs, mixing "black" and "white" sounds, made him popular—and controversial—as did his uninhibited stage and television performances. He recorded songs in the rock and roll genre, with tracks like "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock" later embodying the style. Presley had a versatile voice and had unusually wide success encompassing other genres, including gospel, blues, ballads and pop. To date, he is the only performer to have been inducted into four music halls of fame.......... "

Wiki goes on and on.... Hmm.... well, how come i don't post in the new year yet? Its 7:45 in the morning and i'm sitting in from of ma comp typing out this blog! Hey, you know wat? Today is republic day, yipee!

Eh.... doesn't the fact that today is the republic day cheer you up?? No?? Well, sorry mate, there's nothin i can do about it..

Today i finished downloading some songs of the King! And now you are wondering wat the heck? While browsing through the Arsenal fan site i came to know, his song "The Wonder of You" has been chosen as the official gooner anthem! So i went over to You tube and watched the video!

And to the wonder of me i loved the song! The Elvis mania set in and i queued up some of his songs for downloading.... this morning i finished them and currently i'm listening to one of the songs... I must confess the old bloke with "pseudo-cripples" and a cult following for his unnatural, crazy sideburns has some substance [:D]. He's pretty good.... I'm in love with his songs...Great! No wonder he's The King!

"Its rock and roll time, baby"

Winamp 5.5

Thought I'd sneak in again with my second post of the day.
Well the title says it all. I downloaded the new version of Winamp- Version 5.5. This one's simply awesome. Let me jot down some of the unending list of features they've added.

1. Auto tagging- Ever wished that all the mp3s (ya that's the modern jargon for songs) you have didn't have rubbish in their ID3 tag or worse still don't have any tag at all? Here's the answer to all the woes. Every file can be auto-tagged using this new feature. I've tried it on my collection and found it very satisfactory. 95% percent of the entries were correct- that includes the one's in languages other than English, including Malayalam. Auto tagging can also be done for multiple files at a time so that you need not wait for each tagging to be completed.

2. Album art- This is a feature I'd felt winamp shud've encompassed much before than now. Better late than never. The album art is pretty powerful (I'm sure they'll improve it further, next time). Automatic updating was done for half of my albums (I was surprised to see a Mallu album in that list). I became so hooked onto that feature, that the whole day I downloaded album art manually (those which weren't done automatically) and attached 'em.

3. Notification- I'm not highlighting this as a star attraction cuz media player addicts might already be accustomed to the feature. Anyway it gives a chic appearance to Winamp.

4. Jump to file- Unlike the usual jump to file options in other players, winamp has a powerful jump to file queue manager (It was introduced in 5.35). It allows the user to enqueue songs in order. So you don't hafta create another playlist just so that you need to hear those songs in order. It also helps me to keep my fav songs in playlist and still allow me to hear songs according to my current mood.

Signing off.. I'm still discovering all the features. Btw did i say the new skin (Bento) looks cool too. Here's a peek at it:

I almost forgot to mention why I used winamp above other more flashy players. It's because all through these years, winamp had been the least memory hungry player (with abundant features). Somehow winamp has continued with that tradition.. the new version takes maximum of 10MB when running from tray.

Flushing Life down the Drain

The following is nothing but what happened today.. As Einstein once said, everything is relative. So the narration wouldn't be completed without stating the observer - me.

I woke up around 9 am. Don't remember anything that happened before that. There are days when you can't recollect the dreams even if you try hard. So nothing happened till 10:30 am. Oh did i mention waking up at 9? Ya watched TV till then. There's lots to say about TV abuse. I hate it completely when time's spend worthlessly in front of the idiot box, but that's what i end up doing most of the days.

I walked to college with Sedra and Smith in my backpack. No they're not characters in the new Matrix movie. Anyone who's acquainted with that book will acknowledge that my journey was that of ant climbing a hill with a 5 kg stone on his back. And to think that this was the second time i was making the same journey..hoping this one wouldn't be futile.

Thankfully, the library was open this time around. The book had fine.. 10 rs for just 2 days. I smiled, the book wasn't taken in my name. [Clue: In plus Aswin minus Mo]. The smile was instantly wiped off my face. The realisation struck me that I too had to return a book. Another 15 bucks wasted on fine, that too for a book I hadn't opened. I returned to our class.

Iceman had the remedy for my disappointment in his hands, or was it in his pocket? Anyway, soon I had in my hand what he had in his pocket, the mobile having this beautiful song... Oru Venal Puzhayil from the movie Pranayakalm. I was stuck in time-space continuum for the next hour, entrapped, enthralled and entranced. It was already getting late for the second part of my journey. Life takes us through many ways, some certain others uncertain. I wasn't sure exactly where my destination lay.

Mission: Drain at the Bakery
Map of Area: Provided
Target: Uncertain
Aim: Get a replacement drain tube for the washing machine.
Time Limit: Till evening
Armory: 700 bucks, backpack

The mission didn't get off to a good start. I'd to wait for half an hour in front of the college. Senior chechis going back after placements were my only entertainment. If I waited any longer, I would've ended up in some drain by the end of the day. So, I walked to the next junction. My first stroke of luck came in the way of a red monster. It stopped breathing fire in front of me and told me to hop on. It got me close to my destination and went off again, breathing fire as ever.

I walked up a way which I thought would lead me to the target. Little did I know then that I was going farther away from the target. Feeling something fishy, I called my lifeline... She directed me to the right path. Reached the target and acquired the required aim. I wasn't just about to go to the exit without having some fun of my own. Hunger led me to Ambrosia. Then I spend time waiting for my chicken burger ogling at the two chicks seated in the adjacent table. They weren't very pretty, but who cared!

I felt too bored to go back home. So I got down at Sreekariyam and went to my friend's house. We played a game of chess.. I won. Then another friend came along.. We downloaded some songs and videos. I'd suggested to download a song I'd heard long back. Now, back home, I'm hearing that song for the umpteenth time.. The song's Abhi Nahin Aana by Sona. Powerful emotions, don't have any other word to describe it.

Well..what was the purpose of this blog. Such an ordinary day, but revealed one thing that I'm completely crazy about. No it's not TV or gals.

Music is the wine which inspires one to new generative processes, and I am Bacchus who presses out this glorious wine for mankind and makes them spiritually drunken. ~Ludwig van Beethoven
